Removing and installing cylinder head
Removing cylinder head
  • ● Engine in vehicle
  • ● Lock carrier must be in service position .

Notes:

  • ◆ Secure all hose connections with the correct hose clips (same as original equipment)

  • ◆ All cable ties which are opened or cut open when removing must be replaced in the same position when installing.
  • ‒ Obtain radio code on vehicles with coded radio.
  • ‒ With ignition switched off disconnect battery earth strap.
  • ‒ Draining cooling system=> Page 19-5
  • ‒ Unscrew securing bolts for front exhaust pipe / exhaust manifold accessible from below .
  • ‒ Remove intake manifold => Page 15-10.
  • ‒ Remove ribbed belt and ribbed belt tensioning element => Page 13-18.

  • ‒ → Remove enginecover panels -arrows-.
  • ‒ Takeoff cover above air cleaner housing.

 
A15-0222
  • ‒ → Unplug connectors -2- and -3- at air mass meter and ACF valve, move wiring clear and place it on engine.
  • ‒ Pull ACF valve -1- off air cleaner housing.
  • ‒ Remove air cleaner housing -arrow-.
  • ‒ Unscrew bolts accessible from above securing front exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold.
  • ‒ Push exhaust system towards the rear so that studs on exhaust manifold are free.
 
A34-0124
  • ‒ → Disengage connector -arrow- for lambda probe from retainers, unplug connector and move wiring clear.

 
A15-0240
  • ‒ → Unplug connector -1- at coolant temperature sender -G2/-G62.
  • ‒ Unplug connector -2- at temperature sensor -G18.
  • ‒ Unclip all wiring from cylinder head and move clear to one side.
  • ‒ Remove top coolant pipe.
 
A15-0024
  • ‒ Pull off coolant hose going to heat exchanger (heater unit) at back of cylinder head (first release retainers on connecting flange).
  • ‒ Remove toothed belt guard (upper) => Page 13-28.
  • ‒ → Set crankshaft to markings for TDC of No. 1 cylinder -arrows- by turning central bolt on crankshaft sprocket in direction of rotation.

  • ‒ → Loosen toothed belt tensioner with Torx wrench T45 -lower arrow-.
  • ‒ Press toothed belt tensioner downwards.
  • ‒ Take toothed belt off camshaft sprocket.
  • ‒ Unscrew Torx bolt and pivot tensioner plate forwards.

A13-0096
  • ‒ → Using 8 mm hexagon key, turn toothed belt tensioning roller -1- slowly and with constant firm pressure in direction of arrow, so that holes -2- in tensioner piston and housing are aligned.

Note:

Do not loosen bolt -3-.

  • ‒ With the tensioner in this position, insert a suitable retaining pin (such as a 2 mm drill bit or nail) into the two holes.
  • ‒ Take toothed belt off camshaft sprocket.

All models

  • ‒ Remove cylinder head cover.
 
A15-0134
  • ‒ → Keep to specified sequence when loosening cylinder head bolts.
  • ‒ Remove cylinder head.
