Checking exhaust system for leaks > < Removing and installing front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter

Stress-free alignment of exhaust system
Stress-free alignment of exhaust system
l  The exhaust system must be aligned when it is cool.
   
Vehicles without clamp between centre silencer and rear silencer
–  Loosen bolts on front clamp → Item.
–  Push exhaust system towards front of vehicle -arrow-, so that rear mounting for rear silencer is preloaded by -a- = 7 ... 9 mm.

–  Align rear silencer so it is horizontal.
–  Check clearance between tailpipes and bumper:
l  Distance -a- is the same on both sides.
–  At the same time, distance -b- must be obtained between bumper cut-out and bottom edge of tailpipes.
l  Dimension -b- = 97 ... 103 mm.
–  Tighten bolted connections of front clamp evenly to 40 Nm → Item.

Vehicles with clamp between centre silencer and rear silencer
  Note
On vehicles with clamp fitted between centre silencer and rear silencer, it is also necessary to align the centre silencer.
–  Loosen bolts on front clamp → Item and rear clamp → Item.
–  Press exhaust system towards front of vehicle -arrow- so that mounting (rear left) for centre silencer is preloaded by -a- = 7 ... 9 mm.
–  Tighten bolted connections of front clamp evenly to 40 Nm → Item.

–  Press rear silencer towards front of vehicle -arrow- until mounting (rear right) on rear silencer is preloaded by -a- = 7 ... 9 mm.

–  Align rear silencer so it is horizontal.
–  Check clearance between tailpipes and bumper:
l  Distance -a- is the same on both sides.
–  At the same time, distance -b- must be obtained between bumper cut-out and bottom edge of tailpipes.
l  Dimension -b- = 97 ... 103 mm.
–  Tighten bolt connections for rear clamp → Item evenly to 40 Nm.
