| Irregular valve noises when starting engine are normal. |
Special tools and workshop equipment required |

| Start engine and leave it running until coolant temperature has reached approx. 80 °C. |

| Increase engine speed to about 2500 rpm for approx. 2 minutes; perform test drive if necessary. |
Note If irregular valve noise disappears but repeatedly re-occurs when travelling short distances, renew oil retention valves. Fitting location of oil retention valves: beneath cover on intake manifold → Chapter. |
If the hydraulic tappets are still noisy, locate defective tappet as follows: |

| Turn crankshaft until cams of the cylinder to be checked are at the top (push vehicle in direction of travel with fourth gear engaged and ignition switched off). |
