Self-diagnosis for the Motronic system
Connecting vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 or fault reader V.A.G 1551 and selecting functions

Test requirements:

  • ● Battery voltage at least 11 V.
  • ● Earth connections on engine and gearbox OK.

Procedure

 
A24-0028
  • ‒ → Open rear ashtray and remove cover for diagnostic connector.
 
A01-0061
  • ‒ → Connect up vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 with diagnostic wire VAS 5051/1. Alternatively, connect fault reader V.A.G 1551 with diagnostic wire V.A.G 1551/3A.
Important:
  • ◆ When driving the vehicle for measurement and test purposes, always secure the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 1551 or fault reader V.A.G 1551 to the rear seat and operate it from there.
  • ◆ Observe the safety precautions

Note:

The following describes self-diagnosis using the fault reader V.A.G 1551 only.

When using the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051, follow the procedures described in equipment's operating instructions.

 
→ Indicated on display:
V.A.G self diagnosis    HELP
1 - Rapid data transfer*
2 - Flash code output*

*Displays appear alternately

  • ‒ If no display appears, check diagnostic wires:

=> "Current Flow Diagrams, Electrical Fault-finding and Fitting Locations" binder; Fault-finding program "Diagnostic wiring"

Depending on the function required:

  • ‒ Switch the ignition on.
  • or
  • start engine => Page 01-7, "Selectable functions" table.
  • ‒ Switch on printer using the Print key
    (Warning lamp in key lights up).
  • ‒ Press key 1 for "Rapid data transfer".
 
→ Indicated on display:
Rapid data transfer     HELP
Enter address word XX

 
→ Press keys 0 and 1 for address word "Engine electronics" and press the Q key to confirm entry.

→ If the display shows one of the messages reproduced here, run through the fault-finding procedure as described in the Fault-finding Program for diagnostic wiring.

Workshop Code from V.A.G 1551 which was used to perform the last coding

1)This engine is a "biturbo" engine, i.e. two turbochargers are installed in the engine. "Bi" (Latin) signifies two or double.

If the coding differs from the vehicle version, then:

  • ‒ Check control unit coding => Page 01-89.
    Encoding engine control unit
  • ‒ Press the ⇒key.
 
→ Display readout (relevant chassis number):

  • ◆ xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx: 17-digit vehicle identification number (chassis number)
  • ◆ yyyyyyyyyyyyyy: 14-digit identification number for immobiliser control unit

Note:

The additional readout (vehicle and immobiliser identification number) is only displayed if the vehicle is fitted with what is known as "Immobiliser III".
