Checking selector lever position on automatic gearbox

Notes:

  • ◆ The automatic gearbox control unit -J217 informs the engine control unit whether a gear is engaged (selector lever in position 1, 2, 3, R or D) or not (selector lever in position P or N).
  • ◆ When the selector lever is in position P or N the automatic gearbox control unit -J217 makes an earth connection to contact 22 on the engine control unit.
  • ‒ Connect fault reader V.A.G 1551 .
  • ‒ Switch ignition on.
  • ‒ Select "Read measured value block" (function 08) and Display Group 19.

→ Indicated on display:
Read measured value block 19    ⇒
    1    2    3    4

Display zone 2 should read "0" (selector lever in position P or N).

  • ‒ Operate the footbrake and engage a gear (selector lever in position 1, 2, 3, R or D).

Display zone 2 should read "1".

  • ‒ → If the display readout is not as specified, connect test box V.A.G 1598/22 to the wiring harness for the engine control unit
    => Page 24-13.
  • ‒ Connect diode test lamp between socket 3 (terminal 30) and socket 22.
