The engine speed sender is both a speed sender and a reference mark sender. If it fails the engine will cut out.

• ‒ Switch off ignition.
• ‒ Disconnect sender connector
  =>Fitting locations overview, Page 23-4.
• ‒ → Connect multimeter (resistance test range) between contacts 1 and 2 on the sender connector.

• Specification: approx. 1 kω

If the specification is not obtained:

• ‒ Replace engine speed sender (G28).

If the specification is obtained:

• ‒ Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to wiring harness for engine control unit. Do not connect to the engine control unit itself.

The following wiring connections are to be checked for open circuits and/or short to positive or negative.

• ‒ Rectify any open/short circuit as necessary.
