Special tools and workshop equipment required

  • ◆ V.A.G 1402 Power steering tester
  • ◆ V.A.G 1402/3 Adapter
  • ◆ V.A.G 1402/6 Hose from adapter set
  • ◆ V.A.G 1921 Hose clamp pliers

  • ‒ → Unfasten hose clamps -arrows- and take out intake hose -1-.
  • ‒ Place drip tray in position.
  • ‒ Unscrew union nut -2- whilst providing support at hexagon of pressure pipe.
  • ‒ Use dummy plug to seal off pipe to steering box.

A48-0297
  • ‒ → Screw adapter -V.A.G 1402/3- into expansion hose with pipe leading to vane pump.
  • ‒ Screw hose of pressure gauge -V.A.G 1402- to adapter -V.A.G 1402/3-.

N48-0557
  • ‒ → Close cut-off valve of pressure gauge (lever in -position 1-).
  • ‒ Re-install intake hose.
  • ‒ Top up fluid in reservoir if necessary.

Checking pressure:

Pay attention to the following to avoid damaging pump:

  • ◆ Engine must not run for more than 10 seconds when performing this test.
  • ◆ Start engine without pressing accelerator and allow it to idle.
  • ◆ Take pump pressure reading at idling speed immediately after starting (have second mechanic take reading).
  • ◆ Maximum pressure displayed is definitive, as pressure decreases in the course of the test.

N48-0557
  • ‒ Then check delivery pressure.
Attention:
Do not open cut-off valve on pressure gauge when checking delivery pressure (lever in position -1-).
  • ‒ Start engine (max. 10 seconds) and take pressure reading at idle (2nd mechanic required).
