Wheels and tyres > < Checking steering column for damage

A4 Mk1

Running gear, Front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive
Mechanically adjustable steering column with no column tube
Removing and installing steering lock housing

Removing

Attention:
Wheels must be in straightahead position before removing steering wheel.
Heed safety precautions for working on airbags.=>General Body Repairs, Interior; Repair Group 69; Airbag safety instructions
Non-compliance with the above can result in subsequent airbag system failure.
  • ‒ Remove driver's airbag unit.

=> General Body Repairs, Interior; Repair Group 69; Servicing driver's airbag

  • ‒ Remove airbag steering wheel .
  • ‒ Remove coil connector with slip ring.

  • ‒ Remove steering column switch.

=> General Body Repairs, Interior; Repair Group 70; Dash Panel

  • ‒ On vehicles with automatic gearbox, disengage locking cable
    .
  • ‒ Remove lock cylinder.

=> Electrical System; Repair Group 94; Servicing ignition/starter switch and lock cylinder; Removing and installing lock cylinder for steering/starting lock

  • ‒ → Drill out shear bolts -1- or chisel out with appropriate tool.
  • ‒ Detach steering lock housing.

Installing

  • ‒ Install steering lock housing.
  • ‒ Screw in new shear bolts.
  • ‒ Tighten shear bolts until head shears off.
    • Shear-off moment of new bolts ≥ 20 Nm
  • ‒ On vehicles with automatic gearbox, engage locking cable
    .
  • ‒ Check operation of locking cable .
  • ‒ Install lock cylinder.

=> Electrical System; Repair Group 94; Servicing ignition/starter switch and lock cylinder; Removing and installing lock cylinder for steering/starting lock

  • ‒ Fit steering column switch.

=> General Body Repairs, Interior; Repair Group 70; Dash Panel

  • ‒ Fit coil connector with slip ring.

=> General Body Repairs, Interior; Repair Group 69; Servicing driver's airbag

  • ‒ Install airbag steering wheel => Page 48-156.
  • ‒ Install driver's airbag unit.

=> General Body Repairs, Interior; Repair Group 69; Servicing driver's airbag

Attention:
Make sure there is no-one in the vehicle when connecting battery.
