Table of warning lamp functions

A01-0047
  • ◆ If the self-diagnosis function detects a fault in the system, this will be indicated (with ignition on) by the warning lamps in the dash panel insert. The warning lamps are located in the dash panel insert.

→ Dash panel insert without FIS

  • ◆ The diagram shows the warning lamps for ABS/EDL -K47 (right arrow), brake system warning lamp -K118 (centre arrow, red brake fault symbol) and TCS warning lamp -K86 (left arrow).

→ Dash panel insert with FIS

  • ◆ The warning lamp -K118 is not supplied with FIS. The red brake fault symbol appears in the display.
  • ◆ If the brake system is not fully functional, but the ABS/EDL warning lamp -K47 and the red brake fault symbol do not light up, this means the fault must be sought in the conventional braking system (mechanical/hydraulic components)

Reasons for warning lamps illuminating

If an irregularity occurs in the self test after switching on the ignition and the warning lamps -K47 and -K86 do not light for 2 seconds test the warning lamps; => Perform "Electrical check" Page

- If the ABS/EDL warning lamp does not light up during the self-test phase: Short to earth in wiring from contact 21 of control unit -J104 to dash panel insert (actuation of ABS/EDL warning lamp). This fault does not affect the actuation of the TCS warning lamp. TCS warning lamp lights during self test on vehicles fitted with traction control system (TCS) => Perform "Electrical check", Page 01-163, Test step 8.

- If the actuation of warning lamps -K47 and -K86 and the voltage supply to control unit -J104 are OK, the warning lamps will light up for 2 seconds during the self test phase when the ignition is switched on.

The following applies to vehicles with control units which incorporate a back-up feature for the electronic brake pressure distribution function:
These vehicles can be identified by referring to the notes in the table under "Interrogate control unit version";

The vehicle is with or without TCS. If the ABS/EDL warning lamp illuminates continuously after the ignition is switched on, and the red brake fault symbol also illuminates 3 seconds after the ignition is switched on:

Important
There is a risk of accident if the vehicle is driven in this condition. The function of the brake system will be impaired. As the brake pressure is no longer controlled by the electronic brake force distribution the rear wheels tend to break excessively. Due to this the rear of the vehicle may break away unexpectedly.

- Fault reader V.A.G 1551 is connected and the diagnostic link has been established with control unit -J104.
- In vehicles with automatic gearbox and "high-line" dash panel insert, the red brake fault symbol does not appear immediately after the ignition is switched on. The driver instruction "Apply foot brake when selecting gear with vehicle stationary" is given priority. Operate the foot brake and engage a gear. If the actuation of the red brake fault symbol is OK, the symbol will now light up.
- Detection of fault by self-diagnosis results in switching off of electronic brake pressure distribution EPBD, ABS, EDL and TCS. "Interrogate fault memory"

The vehicle is equipped with traction control system (TCS).
- A fault exists which affects only the TCS. The ABS and EDL systems are not switched off. Interrogate fault memory => Page 01-163, Test steps 10 and 11.
- TCS in controlled operation. Warning lamp for TCS flashes 3 times per second.
- Short to positive in TCS switch: The TCS warning lamp will extinguish 5 minutes after the ignition is switched on.
- The warning lamp illuminates continuously after the ignition is switched on, and none of the faults listed in this section of the table are present. Short to earth in wiring from contact 20 of control unit -J104 to dash panel insert (actuation of TCS warning lamp).

There is a problem. The warning lamps light during the self test and then extinguish normally. Failure to light may be due to the following:

- "Brake light switch-F" fault stored in fault memory; Interrogate fault memory => Page 01-137.

The vehicle is with or without TCS. No faults are stored in the fault memory. If the ABS/EDL warning lamp illuminates continuously after the ignition is switched on, and the red brake fault symbol also illuminates 3 seconds after the ignition is switched on: TCS warning lamp does not light even on vehicles with TCS.

Important
There is a risk of accident if the vehicle is driven in this condition. The function of the brake system will be impaired. As the brake pressure is no longer controlled by the electronic brake force distribution the rear wheels tend to break excessively. Due to this the rear of the vehicle may break away unexpectedly.

- Open circuit or short to positive in wiring from contact 21 of control unit -J104 to dash panel insert (actuation of ABS warning lamp) => Perform "Electrical check", Page 01-163, Test step 1.

No faults are stored in the fault memory. The red brake fault symbol illuminates continuously after the ignition is switched on.

- Brake fluid level too low
- Fault in dash panel insert: Perform "Electrical check", Page 01-163, Test step 9.
