Encoding control unit   Note Encoding sets the dash panel insert to the specific vehicle equipment.

Sequence of operations –  Start dash panel insert self-diagnosis → Chapter. Display on -VAS 5051B-: –  From list -1-, select function “07 - Encoding control unit”.

Display on -VAS 5051B-: 1 -  Enter code word

Encoding table
Optional extras	0				No optional extras
	1				Brake lining wear indicator active
	2				Seat belt warning system active
	4				Washer fluid warning system active
	16				Navigation system
If the vehicle is fitted with several encodable optional extras, add up the numbers of the individual optional extra codes. Example: l  Brake lining wear indicator active, washer fluid warning system active: 1 + 4 = 5.

Display on -VAS 5051B-: –  Use keypad -2- to enter the control unit code as per encoding table.

				Brake lining wear indicator active, washer fluid warning system active: 1 + 4 = 5

–  Confirm entry by touching Q key. Display on -VAS 5051B-: 1 -  Encoding in progress –  Wait until next display appears.

Display on -VAS 5051B-: 1 -  Vehicle system encoding completed 2 -  Control unit identification with new code (old code in parentheses) –  Terminate function “07 - Encoding control unit” by touching ← key.

Fault messages on -VAS 5051B- If display zone -1- shows the fault message “Function unknown or cannot be implemented at present”: –  Check whether the correct dash panel insert has been fitted → Parts catalogue. Or a non-released code has been entered. Repeat the encoding procedure if necessary.
