Function description

Under certain conditions, the Audi navigation system processes the signals from the world-wide satellite navigation system GPS (Global Positioning System).

After initial commissioning or when transporting the vehicle by rail, ferry or other forms of transport, the vehicle location is determined by means of signals from the satellite navigation system GPS or by manual entry of the new location.

From this point in time, the navigation system is operational and functions according to the principle of coupling navigation.

The location of the vehicle is continuously updated by means of a magnetic field sender (electronic compass) and the rear axle wheel sensor data from the ABS control unit.

The system uses these measured values to determine the direction of travel and the distance travelled by the vehicle. These values are compared with the road maps stored on the navigation CD, i.e. the vehicle location is determined by the comparison of measured values and stored data.

Corrections are made in the navigation system control unit for discrepancies between the measured position (magnetic field sender values and the ABS data) and the theoretical position (location on the stored road maps).

If the vehicle is not in one of the areas covered by the navigation CD (country, town or road), the display "OFF-ROAD" or "OFF MAP" appears on the dash panel insert display. Only the distance as the crow flies and the direction of the destination are displayed as, in this case, the navigation system is not able to compare the GPS signals and vehicle measured values with stored data.
