| Since 1 January 1998, all passenger vehicles licensed for road use within the European Union must have a type approval in line with EU guidelines; vehicles licensed for road use with a single vehicle approval according to § 21 StVZO in Germany are excluded from this regulation. |
| This means the same guidelines apply to all automobile manufacturers. As a consequence, international trade within the EU has become easier. |
| The COC paper contains the EC type approval number and comprehensive technical vehicle data such as the emission class and all permissible wheel/tyre combinations. |
