Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Vehicle diagnostic tester
   
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1410-

  WARNING
Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
1 - Side airbag (rear; driver/passenger side)
t  Removing:
–  Disconnect battery earth strap → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Remove seat bench (rear): vehicles up to 10.2004 → Chapter, vehicles from 11.2004 onwards → Chapter.
–  Take airbag connector -7- out of slot in rear seat padding -9-.
–  Press retaining tab -8- and unplug airbag connector -7-.
–  Remove rear side padding (left and right) → Chapter.
–  Cut through cable tie -5-.
–  Open cable duct -6-.
–  Remove bolts -3- (2x).
–  Take out side airbag unit -1-.
t  Installing:
–  Install airbag unit.
–  Switch on ignition.
  WARNING
Make sure nobody is in the vehicle when the battery is being connected.
–  Connect battery earth strap → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
  Note
t  Observe measures to be taken after connecting the battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
t  If the airbag warning lamp -K75- indicates a fault following installation, you must interrogate, erase and then re-interrogate the event memory → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
2 - Side padding
3 - Bolts (2x)
q   Tightening torque: 8 Nm
4 - Airbag label
q   Indicates side padding for side airbag
5 - Cable tie
6 - Cable duct
7 - Connector for airbag unit
8 - Retaining tab
9 - Padding for rear seat
