Removing and installing side airbag igniter (driver side/front passenger side)
Removing and installing side airbag igniter (driver side/front passenger side)
Removing and installing side airbag igniter on driver side -N199- and side airbag igniter on front passenger side -N200-, front (standard seats, seats with electric adjustment; airbag located inside seat)
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Vehicle diagnostic tester
   
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1410-
  W00-0554
t  Engine and gearbox support -VAS 6095-
  W00-1273
t  Seat repair stand -VAS 6136-
  W00-1274
t  Upholstery clip pliers -V.A.G 1634-

  WARNING
Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
1 - Fastening strip (side)
2 - Connector for side airbag
3 - Latch
4 - Side airbag (driver side/front passenger side)
t  Removing
–  Disconnect battery earth strap → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Remove seat:
t  Standard seat: vehicles from 11.2004 onwards → Chapter
t  Seat with electric adjustment: vehicles from 11.2004 onwards → Chapter
t  Recaro seat from 11.2004 onwards → Chapter
–  Attach seat repair stand -VAS 6136- to engine and gearbox support -VAS 6095-.
–  Attach front seat to seat repair stand -VAS 6136-.
–  Remove backrest cover panel:
t  Standard seat: vehicles from 11.2004 onwards → Chapter
t  Seat with electric adjustment: vehicles from 11.2004 onwards → Chapter
t  Recaro seat from 11.2004 onwards → Chapter
–  Use screwdriver to prise out fastening strips (bottom) -9- (3x).
–  Use screwdriver to prise out fastening strip on side -1- and fold cover forwards.
–  Cut through upholstery clips -10- (4x) at protective cover for side airbag -6-.
–  Push latch -3- downwards and unplug connector for side airbag -2-.
–  Unscrew bolt -7-.
–  Drill out rivet -5-.
–  Push side airbag -4- upwards and take out side airbag.
t  Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
–  Engage side airbag -4- in backrest frame.
–  Push side airbag -4- down as far as it will go.
–  Position lug of earth wire -11- between backrest frame and side airbag -4-.
–  Secure earth wire -11- with a rivet.
–  Renew bolt -7-.
–  Secure side airbag -4- with bolt -7-.
–  Make sure airbag cable -13- runs through cable guide -14- and is attached to backrest frame using clip -12-.
–  Use upholstery clip pliers -V.A.G 1634- to install new upholstery clips on protective cover for side airbag.
–  Switch on ignition.
  WARNING
Make sure nobody is in the vehicle when the battery is being connected.
–  Connect battery earth strap → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
  Note
t  Observe measures to be taken after connecting the battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
t  If the airbag warning lamp -K75- indicates a fault following installation, you must interrogate, erase and then re-interrogate the event memory → Vehicle diagnostic tester.

7 - Bolt
q   Tightening torque: 10 Nm
q   Always renew after removing
8 - Front seat
9 - Fastening strips (bottom; 3x)
10 - Upholstery clips (4x)
11 - Earth wire
12 - Clip
13 - Airbag wire
