Removing
WARNING
Observe measures to be taken when disconnecting battery.

Disconnect battery earth strap at battery
→ Electrical system; Rep. gr.27
.
–
Remove airbag unit (driver side):
t
→ Chapter „Removing and installing airbag unit (standard steering wheel)“
t
→ Chapter „Removing and installing airbag unit (sports steering wheel)“
t
→ Chapter „Removing and installing airbag unit (multi-function steering wheel)“
t
→ Chapter „Removing and installing airbag unit (RS 4)“

Remove steering wheel
→ Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr.48

Remove storage compartment (driver side)
→ Chapter

Remove instrument cluster
→ Electrical system; Rep. gr.90

Remove glove box
→ Chapter
.
–
Remove airbag unit (front passenger side)
→ Chapter

Remove centre console:

USA vehicles up to 10.2004 and Rest-of-World vehicles

USA vehicles from 11.2004 onwards

Remove centre section of dash panel
→ Chapter

Removing light switch and adjuster for headlight range control
–
Press light switch
-arrow 1-
and at the same time turn it clockwise
-arrow 2-
.
–
Hold switch in this position and pull it out of switch housing

.
–
Unplug electrical connector.
–
Press adjuster for headlight range control out of switch housing.
–
Unplug connector.
Removing trim (top) for steering column switch
Airbag unit (driver side) and steering wheel removed.
–
Pull steering column out and tilt downwards as far as it will go.
–
Remove bolts
-1-
(2x).
Tightening torque: 3 Nm
–
Unscrew Torx bolts
-3-
using special screwdriver T8 -T 40056-.
Tightening torque: 0.6 Nm
–
Unclip trim cover downwards from dash panel

Detach upper trim
-2-
for steering column switch.
Removing photosensor
–
Carefully prise off cover

.
–
Remove bolt
-B-
.
–
Unplug cable connector.
Removing defroster vent (centre)
–
Unscrew bolt
-1-
for defroster vent.
Tightening torque: 0.8 Nm
–
Unplug electrical connector.
–
Detach defroster vent.
Removing dash panel loudspeaker
Defroster vent (centre) removed
–
Remove bolts
-1-
(2x).
Tightening torque: 2 Nm
–
Swivel out loudspeaker and unplug connector.
Unplugging connectors for vent temperature senders
–
Unplug connector

at temperature senders (left and right).
–
Unplug electrical connectors for lighting of dash panel vents.
Note
Illustration shows vent temperature sender on passenger's side.
Removing dash panel end trim (left-side)
–
Detach dash panel end trim (left-side)

using front-end hook -3370-.
Removing outer dash panel fastener (left-side)
–
Remove bolts
-1-
(2x).
Tightening torque: 4.5 Nm
Removing dash panel end trim (right-side)
–
Detach dash panel end trim (right-side)
-arrow-
using front-end hook -3370-.
Removing outer dash panel fastener (right-side)
–
Remove bolts
-1-
(2x).
Tightening torque: 4.5 Nm
Removing dash panel fastener (driver side)
–
Remove bolts
-1-
(2x).
Tightening torque: 4.5 Nm
Removing dash panel fastener (centre)
–
Remove bolts
-1-
(2x).
Tightening torque: 3 Nm
–
Remove bolts
-2-
(2x).
Tightening torque: 4.5 Nm
–
Pull out dash panel towards rear.
Installing
WARNING
For correct combination of dash panel and airbag unit refer to
→ Parts catalogue
.
–
Check that felt pad
-2-
is fitted on clip
-1-
(left and right).
–
Press down dash panel slightly and slide it into clip.
–
Check that front of dash panel is properly fitted in clip by raising slightly.
–
Remaining installation is performed in reverse order of removal.
