Activating and deactivating auxiliary heating/ventilation
Activating and deactivating auxiliary heating/ventilation
  Note
The control unit in dash panel insert -J285- can only exchange data with the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- by way of the convenience data bus system if the control unit in dash panel insert -J285- has been encoded/adapted for auxiliary heater as optional extra → Chapter → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.01 and → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
–  Switch on ignition.

On vehicles as of Model Year 2005 (gradual conversion), auxiliary heating/ventilation is set with the ignition switched on by way of the switches -A- and -B- at the windscreen wiper stalk on the steering column.
  A82-10037
On vehicles up to Model Year 2005 (gradual conversion), auxiliary heating/ventilation is set with the ignition switched on by way of the rotary knob/pushbutton -A- in the centre console.
–  Pressing button -B- (“MENU” button) provides access to the DIS (driver information system) start menu.
  Note
  A82-0373
t  The following description outlines the auxiliary heating/ventilation activation and deactivation procedure by way of the rotary knob/pushbutton -A- in the centre console. On vehicles with no rotary knob/pushbutton -A-, the various settings can be made in the same manner via switches -A- and -B- on the windscreen wiper stalk → Owner's manual.
  A82-10037
t  The desired function can be selected by turning the rotary knob/pushbutton -A-.
t  The selected function can be activated by pressing the rotary knob/pushbutton -A-.
t  Pressing button -B- in front of the rotary knob/pushbutton -A- (“MENU”) permits return to the “Settings” menu at any time.
  A82-0373
t  Auxiliary heating/ventilation is controlled by way of settings made on the DIS display. Settings can be made with the rotary knob/pushbutton in the centre console.
t  A full description of auxiliary heating/ventilation control is given in the owner's manual → Owner's manual.
The function “Type of display” apears in the DIS (driver information system).
–  Select “Setting” function in the DIS by turning the rotary knob/pushbutton.
–  Activate “Setting” function by pressing the rotary knob/pushbutton.
The “Setting” function is displayed in the DIS.
–  Select “Auxiliary heating/ventilation” function in the DIS by turning the rotary knob/pushbutton.
–  Activate “Auxiliary heating/ventilation” function by pressing the rotary knob/pushbutton.
DIS area -A- displays “Heating/ventilation” function.
The rotary knob/pushbutton can now be used to actuate auxiliary heating/ventilation by way of the various DIS functions (switching on and off, setting timer function etc.). Pay attention to the following when doing so:
t  It is only ever possible to put a tick against and thus activate one of the functions “Heating on”-B-, “Ventilation on”-C- or “Timer”-D-.
t  Tick = yes (function selected)
t  Box = no (function not selected)
t  When implementing auxiliary heating/ventilation by way of the “Timer” function -D- or remote control on vehicles with air conditioner, the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- determines whether “Auxiliary heating” or “Auxiliary ventilation” mode is to be activated as a function of the specified temperature set and the actual temperature measured. This function can be deactivated by way of “Adaption” in the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-. → Air conditioning system; Rep. Gr. 01
t  When implementing auxiliary heating/ventilation by way of the “Timer” function -D- or remote control on vehicles with no air conditioner (heater only), the last mode selected (auxiliary heating or auxiliary ventilation) is activated. On vehicles with air conditioner, this function can be activated by way of “Adaption” in the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-. → Air conditioning system; Rep. Gr.01
  A82-0374
t  The “Heating on” function -B- cannot be selected if there is insufficient fuel in the tank or if a fault has been stored in the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- (tick cannot be made or is deactivated again).
t  The “Heating on”-B- or “Ventilation on”-C- function cannot be selected if there is a fault in the control unit in dash panel insert -J285- or auxiliary heater control unit -J364-.
t  The “Timer” function -D- can be activated by briefly pressing the rotary knob/pushbutton with the “Timer” function selected. Following lengthy pressing of the rotary knob/pushbutton, the display for the currently active timer (1, 2 or 3) starts to flash and the timer can then be switched. The applicable ON time for the selected timer is displayed in area -E-.
t  The applicable ON time for timer (1, 2 or 3) displayed in area -D- is indicated in area -E-.
t  Only one cut-in function can be activated at a time (1, 2 or 3) by way of the “Timer” function -D-.
  Note
t  Any time between 00:00 and 23:59 and any day between 01.01 (1st January) and 31.12 (31st December) can be set as starting time for the timer (1, 2 or 3) set in area -D-. The setting can be made separately for each timer and up to one month in advance.
t  If the starting time entered on the timer has already gone by on a given day, the date automatically switches to the next day on activating the timer.
t  The DIS uses the time displayed by the digital clock in the dash panel insert to control the auxiliary heating/ventilation ON times.
  A82-0375
t  If the vehicle is fitted with a radio controlled clock, the symbol -C- appears in the digital clock in areas where a radio signal is received. The dash panel insert then always displays the correct time and date.
t  The time and date displayed must be checked on vehicles with no radio controlled clock or in areas where radio signal cannot be received.
t  With the “Timer” activated, the symbols for auxiliary heating -A- and auxiliary ventilation -B- appear simultaneously in the clock display.
t  If auxiliary heating/ventilation has been activated, the appropriate symbol flashes (-A- for auxiliary heating or -B- for auxiliary ventilation). Implementation of auxiliary heating/ventilation by way of remote control is also displayed in this manner.
  A82-0376
t  The area -F- display “Duration XX minutes” indicates the set auxiliary heating/ventilation time. This can currently be altered in 5 minute steps in the range between 15 and 60 minutes.
  Note
t  The ON time displayed in area -F- for the timer “1” applies to all functions irrespective of the function used to activate auxiliary heating/ventilation (heating on, ventilation on, timer or remote control) and currently also if timer “2” or “3” is being displayed.
t  To relieve the load on the battery, the auxiliary heater should only be activated for the time required to warm up the passenger compartment.
t  Area -G- only displays “Incl. engine” for vehicles on which this setting has been made in the control unit in dash panel insert -J285- by way of the “Adaption” function in adaption channel “18”.
  Note
t  If there is a tick in area -G- in front of “Incl. engine”, some of the coolant already flows back in auxiliary heating mode via the engine to the auxiliary heater at low coolant temperatures, thus pre-heating the engine. In this setting, some of the heat generated by the auxiliary heater is supplied to the engine and warming of the passenger compartment thus takes correspondingly longer → Chapter.
t  The function “Incl. engine” is only available for vehicles fitted with a heater coolant shut-off valve -N279- which is actuated by the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- (currently only vehicles with 6-cyl. engine) → Chapter
t  Select area -G-“Return” to return to the start menu.
