Removing and installing auxiliary heater
Removing and installing auxiliary heater
t  On replacement, pay attention to correct auxiliary heater version (different design for petrol and diesel) → Chapter.
t  There are different auxiliary heater housing versions:
–  Version “1” currently fitted on vehicles with 4-cyl. TDI engine (horizontal installation) → Chapter
–  Version “2” currently fitted on all vehicles except vehicles with 4-cyl. TDI engine (vertical installation) → Chapter
  Note
t  In auxiliary heating mode, the metering pump -V54- is actuated with full voltage by the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- up to control unit part number index “B”. For control units as of part number index “C” (gradual introduction as of Model Year 2005), the voltage for the actuation signal of the metering pump -V54- will be limited in auxiliary heating mode to 9.2 V with the petrol version and 9.8 V with the diesel version, thus reducing the operating noise of the metering pump -V54-.
t  If the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- is replaced, the function of at least one remote control hand transmitter must be checked on vehicles with “Remote control” as optional extra (if function is not OK, all hand transmitters must be adapted by way of the auxiliary heater control unit -J364-) → Chapter (remote control assignment is performed in the auxiliary heating radio controlled receiver -R64- by way of the auxiliary heater control unit -J364-).
t  If auxiliary heater components have been replaced (e.g. combustion air blower -V6- or auxiliary heater control unit -J364-), check and if necessary adjust the CO2 content of the auxiliary heater exhaust gas → Chapter.
t  If the assignment of the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- (rating plate) differs from the fault reader display, check the adaption (adaption channel “05”). If the type of fuel has been altered in this channel, the setting in the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- changes the first time the ignition is switched on (the type of fuel transmitted by way of the convenience data bus system must coincide with that entered in the “Adaption” function).
t  If the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- has been replaced, auxiliary heater self-diagnosis must be performed after installing the auxiliary heater (interrogate fault memory, check encoding and adaption etc.) → Chapter.
t  Depending on the nature of the repair work, the following checks/settings may have to be made after installing the auxiliary heater → Chapter:
t  Check encoding of auxiliary heater control unit -J364- and enter if necessary.
t  Adapt auxiliary heater control unit -J364- (paying attention to any customer-specific settings).
t  Check remote control operation and if necessary match any remote control units to the auxiliary heating radio controlled receiver -R64- (by way of the auxiliary heater control unit -J364-).
t  Interrogate fault memory of auxiliary heater control unit -J364- and erase any faults displayed.
t  Start engine and interrogate fault memory of all control units fitted (faults may also have been entered for other control units by way of the convenience data bus system).
t  Switch on auxiliary heater and check operation as well as CO2 content of auxiliary heater exhaust gas.
t  After replacing certain auxiliary heater components, switch on auxiliary heater before handing over vehicle to customer and allow auxiliary heater to run for at least 10 minutes in full load operation. There may still be remnants of factory lubricant for example in or on the components and these would evaporate following initial activation as soon as the components become hot.
t  If the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- has been replaced and the auxiliary heater cannot be switched on, perform self-diagnosis, paying attention to the display in the measured value block, display group “090” → Chapter.
