  • ◆ Pay attention to correct assignment when replacing operating and display unit:

  • ◆ Vehicles with and without switch for heated seats feature different versions of operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87 (heating).

  • ◆ Following installation, perform heating system basic setting in specified manner => Page 01-99.
  • ◆ If new -E87 (heating) has been installed and basic setting not performed, fault "Basic setting not performed" is stored in fault memory.
  • ◆ Vehicles with auxiliary heater fitted as optional extra are only to be equipped with operating and display units as of hardware/software version "XX12".
  • ◆ Functions selected are indicated by lighting of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in the various -E87(heating) buttons.
  • ◆ With this -E87 (heating) version, switch for heated rear window and potentiometers for heated seats are integrated and cannot be replaced separately.
  • ◆ After replacing -E87 (heating) always:
    • ‒ Encode -E87 (heating) => Page 01-107
    • ‒ Perform basic setting => Page 01-99
    • ‒ Interrogate fault memory => Page 01-18
  • ◆ On this vehicle, basic settings (e.g. country version, LHD/RHD) of operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87 (heating) are encoded by dash panel insert. Data are transferred via convenience data bus to -E87 (heating); currently valid code is displayed in measured value block => Page 01-114. Direct entry of code into -E87 (heating) is possible for certain equipment versions (e.g. heated windscreen or sun roof with solar cells).

  • ◆ If, on vehicles equipped with an auxiliary heater, an operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87 with hardware/software version up to "XX14" is to be replaced by one with hardware/software version as of "XX15" (index "D" onwards), heed information on vehicles with auxiliary heater => Page 80-76.

  • ◆ As of Model Year 2003, operating and display units for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87 with part number as of index "D" (with hardware/software version as of "XX15") are gradually being introduced. With this -E87 version, the passenger compartment temperature regulation is designed to be somewhat cooler.

  • ◆ Vehicles with 4-cyl. petrol direct injection engine (FSI) are only to be fitted with operating and display units for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87 with part number as of index "D".

  • ‒ → Reach from underneath into centre console and release operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87 (heating) from centre console.

Notes:

  • ◆ Operating and display unit is held in position in centre console by means of 4 retainers -A-.
  • ◆ Should it prove impossible to take out -E87 (heating), remove radio.

  • ‒ Reach through opening and push operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87 (heating) to rear out of centre console.

  • ‒ → Release connectors -A- to -D- and -F- by squeezing retainer tabs and detach.

 
A87-0421
  • ‒ → Screw out bolts -C-, slide trim panel -B- to right and detach from operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87 (heating) -A-.
  • ‒ Install in reverse order.

Note:

  • ◆ Pay attention to exact assignment when replacing operating and display unit (e.g. without or with heated seat switch).
