Removing and installing drive wheel for speedometer sender   Note Speedometer sender -G22- with drive wheel for speedometer sender are not fitted on vehicles from 07.2002. Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Oil seal extractor lever -VW 681-

t  Punch -2062- t  Drip tray

Removing –  If fitted, loosen fasteners -2- and -3- and remove rear noise insulation -B-.

Vehicles with V6 TDI engine: –  Unbolt heat shield for left-side drive shaft -arrows-.

–  Remove nuts -arrows-.

–  Remove bolt -1-.

–  If fitted, remove tunnel brace -1--arrows-. –  Release clamp -2- and remove front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter -3-.   Note The flexible joint (de-coupling element) on the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10° – otherwise it can be damaged.

All models: –  Remove drive shaft (left-side) from flange shaft -B- and tie up as far as possible.   Note Make sure you do not damage surface coating on drive shaft. –  Place container under gearbox. –  Remove flange shaft securing bolt -A-; to do so, screw two bolts into flange and counterhold flange shaft with tyre iron or other suitable lever. –  Pry out oil seal -C- using oil seal extractor lever -VW 681-. –  Using a screwdriver, lever out drive wheel for speedometer sender -D- on alternate sides at the coupling lugs -arrows-. Installing –  Install drive wheel for speedometer sender.

l  The coupling lugs -arrows- face towards the oil seal.   Note Fit the drive wheel carefully onto the differential, making sure that it is kept straight. Do not use force; the drive wheel can break easily. –  Engage coupling lugs in slots in differential cage. –  Renew flange shaft oil seal and install flange shaft → Chapter. Vehicles with V6 TDI engine: –  Install front exhaust pipe and perform stress-free alignment → Rep. Gr.26. –  If fitted, install tunnel brace → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. Gr.66. –  Install heat shield for drive shaft. All models: –  Fill manual gearbox with gear oil and check oil level → Chapter. Tightening torque
