Renewing exhaust camshaft oil seal

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Oil seal extractor -2085-

t	Counterhold tool -3036-

t	Assembly tool -T10071-

Procedure –  Move lock carrier to service position → Chapter. –  Remove toothed belt from camshaft sprocket → Chapter. –  Loosen camshaft sprocket using counterhold tool -3036-. –  Detach camshaft sprocket.

–  To guide oil seal extractor, screw securing bolt for camshaft sprocket -arrow- into camshaft as far as it will go until finger-tight. –  Adjust inner part of oil seal extractor -2085- so that it is level with the outer part and lock in position with knurled screw.

–  Lubricate threaded head of oil seal extractor -2085-, place it in position and, while exerting firm pressure, screw it into oil seal as far as possible. –  Loosen knurled screw and turn inner part of extractor against camshaft until oil seal has been extracted. –  Clamp flats of oil seal extractor in vice and use pliers to remove seal.

–  Place guide sleeve -T10071/1- onto camshaft journal.   Note Do not lubricate sealing lip of oil seal. –  Slide oil seal over guide sleeve onto camshaft journal. –  Detach guide sleeve.

–  Press oil seal in as far as the stop using press sleeve -T10071/3- and bolt -T10071/4-.

–  Install camshaft sprocket. l  Check installation position: The thinner web of the camshaft sprocket faces outwards -arrows- and the marking for No. 1 cylinder TDC is visible.

–  Tighten securing bolt of camshaft sprocket (use counterhold tool -3036-).   Note If a piston is at TDC the valves could strike the piston when turning the camshaft. Pistons must therefore not be at TDC This could otherwise result in damage to valves and pistons. –  Install toothed belt (adjust valve timing) → Anchor. –  Fit toothed belt → Anchor. –  Install poly V-belt → Chapter.

–  Install lock carrier with attachments → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50. –  Allow stop for torque reaction support to rest on rubber buffer for torque reaction support under its own weight and tighten bolts -arrows-. –  Install front bumper cover → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.63. –  Check headlight adjustment → Booklet803. Tightening torques
