Removing
–  Extract hydraulic fluid for power steering from reservoir using used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782-.
  WARNING
Hot steam or hot coolant can escape when expansion tank is opened; cover filler cap with cloth and open carefully.
–  Open filler cap on coolant expansion tank.

–  Remove front right wheel → Rep. Gr.44.
–  Release bolts or quick-release fasteners -1- and -2- and take off front noise insulation.
–  Remove front right wheel housing liner → Rep. Gr.66.
–  Remove bumper cover (front) → Rep. Gr.63.

–  Remove air duct (right-side) -arrow- in front of auxiliary radiator.
–  Drain engine oil → Booklet803 or → Booklet805.

–  Position used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- below connection point.
–  Unscrew bolts -arrows- on engine oil cooler pipes at top section of sump.
–  Pull oil pipes out of top section of sump.
–  Seal off open pipes/lines and connections with clean plugs from engine bung set -VAS 6122-.

–  Remove air duct (left-side) -arrow- in front of auxiliary radiator.

–  Remove bolt -arrow- on top bracket for auxiliary radiator at left of lock carrier.

–  Place drip tray for workshop hoist -VAS 6208- under engine.
–  Unscrew drain plug -arrow- at thermostat housing and drain off coolant at engine.

–  Also remove drain plug -arrow- on front coolant pipe and drain remaining coolant.

–  Release hose clip -arrow- and detach coolant hose (bottom) from radiator.

–  Place used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- under engine.
–  Detach hydraulic lines going to cooling pipes (rear left) at lock carrier -arrows-.

–  Remove bolts -arrows-.
–  Remove air ducts -1- and -2-.

–  Disconnect coolant hose (top) -arrow- from radiator.

–  Remove cover -1- on left side of engine compartment.

–  Detach electrical connectors -1- and -2- from bracket and unplug.
–  Move wiring going to lock carrier clear.

–  Unplug electrical connector -arrow- for headlights on both sides.

–  Unplug electrical connector -arrow- for airbag sensors (left and right) at lock carrier.
–  Move wiring clear.
–  Detach cable for bonnet at lock carrier → Rep. Gr.55.

–  Unplug electrical connector -arrow- for fan (right-side).

–  Unscrew bolts -arrows- at air ducts (left and right) at radiator.
  WARNING
The air conditioner refrigerant circuit must not be opened.
  Note
  A19-10249
To prevent damage to the condenser and refrigerant pipes/hoses, ensure that the pipes and hoses are not stretched, kinked or bent.
–  Detach electrical connector -1- at high-pressure sender -G65-.
–  Remove bolts -arrows-.
–  Detach condenser and pivot downwards (pipes/hoses remain connected).

–  Detach coolant hose (right-side) -arrow- from radiator.

–  Remove bolts -arrows- at lock carrier (left and right).
–  Remove engine compartment seal from lock carrier and wing panel flanges.

–  Unscrew bolts from impact absorbers -arrows- (left and right).
  Note
A second mechanic is required for removing the lock carrier.
–  Remove lock carrier and place down in a secure position.

–  Remove bolt -1- on bracket for coolant pipe.
–  Release hose clip and detach coolant hose -2-.

–  Remove bolts -1 ... 3-.
–  Remove bracket for torque reaction support.

–  Unscrew nut -arrow- and detach mounting for torque reaction support.

Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:
  Note
Secure all hose connections with the correct type of hose clips (same as original equipment) → Parts catalogue.
–  Insert compensating plates -2- of required thickness in gap between bracket for torque reaction support -3- and longitudinal member -1-; for correct type of compensating plates refer to → Electronic parts catalogue.
  Note
You can also use two compensating plates.
–  Install lock carrier with attachments → Rep. Gr.50.
–  Install bumper cover (front) → Rep. Gr.63.
–  Before starting engine, top up hydraulic fluid in power steering reservoir → Rep. Gr.48.
  Note
The power steering pump must not be run when dry.
–  Fill up with engine oil and check oil level → Booklet803 or → Booklet805.
–  Fill cooling system → Anchor.
–  Adjust headlights → Booklet803 or → Booklet805.
