Matching crankshaft bearing shells to bearings in cylinder block
t  Bearing shells of the correct thickness are matched to the bearings in the cylinder block at the factory. Coloured dots on the side of the bearing shells are used to identify the bearing shell thickness.
t  The allocation of the bearing shells on cylinder block is indicated by letters on the front left of cylinder block (legible from outside), as shown in illustration.

  Note
The code letters are also stamped on the retaining frame.
   
Allocation of crankshaft bearing shells for retaining frame (crankshaft manufacturer: Alfing)
t  Bearing shells of the correct thickness are matched to the bearings in the retaining frame at the factory. Coloured dots on the side of the bearing shells are used to identify the bearing shell thickness.
t  The allocation of the bearing shells to the retaining frame is indicated by colour codings on the crankshaft webs, as shown in the illustration.
t  Crankshafts manufactured by Alfing do NOT have a manufacturer's code indicated on the crankshaft.

Allocation of crankshaft bearing shells for retaining frame (crankshaft manufacturer: Weber)
t  Bearing shells of the correct thickness are matched to the bearings in the retaining frame at the factory. Coloured dots on the side of the bearing shells are used to identify the bearing shell thickness.
t  The allocation of the bearing shells on retaining frame is indicated by letters on the front crankshaft web, as shown in illustration. The “X” indicates the end of the row of letters and is next to the coloured marking for bearing 1 (pulley end).
t  Crankshafts manufactured by Weber have the manufacturer's code -A- on the front of the crank web.

The row of letters begins on the left with bearing 5 (flywheel end).
