Removing
  Note
If you are not using a battery charger with back-up function when removing and installing the battery, follow the steps required when disconnecting the battery → Chapter „Disconnecting and connecting battery in luggage compartment“.
–  Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
   
–  Raise and secure luggage compartment floor covering.
–  Lift out moulded insert -5- behind battery -arrow-.
–  Connect battery charger to provide back-up power supply → Chapter.
–  Loosen nut -6- a few turns and disconnect battery clamp of earth cable from battery terminal post.
–  Raise positive terminal cover -2-.
–  Loosen nut -1- several turns and disconnect battery clamp of positive cable from battery post.
–  Disconnect central gas venting system hose -7-.
–  Screw out bolt -4- at battery mount -3-.
–  Pull battery out of battery bracket fastening strip.
–  Lift battery out of luggage compartment.
  WARNING
Observe environmental requirements.
When disposing of used batteries, always observe the required disposal procedures for batteries and sulphuric acid → Electrical system; General information; Rep. Gr.27.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:

t  Only maintenance-free batteries complying with standards “TL82506” (as of December 1997) and “VW75073” (as of August 2001) are to be fitted.
t  Batteries from the Audi parts range feature a base strip adapter for matching to different fastening strips. When and how the base strip adapter is to be used is described in the battery operating instructions.

–  Insert battery in battery bracket.
l  The battery base strip -1- must engage in the mount -2- of the battery bracket.
l  It should no longer be possible to move the battery.
  A27-10050
–  Place battery mount -3- in position.
l  Lug at battery mount must engage in recess at battery base strip.
–  Tighten bolt -4- for battery mount.
–  Connect hose -7- for central gas venting system. Observe notes in → Electrical system; General information; Rep. Gr.27.
Connect up battery in the following sequence with ignition and electrical equipment switched off:
–  Start by connecting pole shoe of positive wire by hand to battery positive terminal “+” and tighten nut -1-.
–  Close positive terminal cover -2-.
–  Attach pole shoe of earth wire by hand to battery negative terminal “–” and tighten nut -6-.
–  After installation, check that battery is securely attached → Electrical system; General information; Rep. Gr.27.
  Note
