Removing and installing backrest (split)
Removing and installing backrest (split)
  Note
Removal and installation are described for the 2/3 section of the split backrest (right-side). The procedures are similar for the 1/3 section of the split backrest (left-side).
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Removal wedge -3409-
Removing
–  Remove seat bench → Chapter.
–  Remove centre belt end fitting (rear) → Chapter.
–  Equipment version with backrest heating: Unplug electrical connector for backrest heating.
Country-specific version with rear belt tensioner igniter:
  WARNING
t  Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Observe disposal regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
–  Switch on ignition.
–  With ignition switched on, disconnect battery earth wire → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
  WARNING
Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. unplugging the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.

–  Unplug electrical connector.
–  To do so, pull connector locking element -2- as far as stop -arrow-. This will release electrical connectors -1- and -3- which can then be unplugged.

All vehicles (continued):
–  Remove cover for centre bracket -5- → Chapter.
–  Remove bolt -4-.
–  Detach retaining clip -3- from centre bracket.
–  Release backrest.
–  Lift backrest -1- out of centre bracket -2-.
–  Pull rear seat backrest out of outer bearing towards centre of vehicle.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:
Country-specific version with rear belt tensioner igniter:
  WARNING
t  Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. plugging in the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.
  Note
t  Make sure electrical connectors are fitted correctly (as far as stop) and engage audibly.
t  Make sure that wiring is not trapped.
  WARNING
The battery must be connected with the ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag or belt tensioner) are inexpertly repaired, this may result in unwanted triggering after connecting the battery. There must not be anyone in the vehicle while you are connecting the battery.
–  With ignition switched on, connect battery earth wire → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
