Removing and installing metering pumpV54
Removing and installing metering pump -V54-
  WARNING
Observe the applicable rules for cleanliness, take the appropriate precautions and heed the relevant safety measures when working on open fuel systems → Fuel supply system; Rep. Gr.20.
  Note
t  Butt-joint the fuel pipes and secure with clips at the marked locations.

t  Depending on the vehicle model, the fuel pipe -A- (hose between metering pump -V54- and fuel pipe to auxiliary heater) may be provided with a constriction (restrictor in fuel pipe hose) for noise reduction or fitted with noise insulation -C- (in the area of the metering pump -V54--B-) (gradual introduction of restrictor or noise insulation in Model Year 2008).
t  If the fuel pipe hose -A- is fitted with a restrictor, the dimensions of this are currently as follows: OD 5 mm, length 7 mm, restrictor bore 1.3 mm. The restrictor (or noise insulation -C-) reduces the increase in pressure in the fuel pipe to the auxiliary heater during the working stroke of the metering pump -V54-, with the result that less -V54- operating noise is transmitted.
t  Between the connection for the fuel pipe from the fuel tank -E- and the metering pump -V54--B- and depending on the version of the metering pump -V54- there may be a strainer -D- to stop dirt particles ingressing into the metering pump.

t  As of Model Year 2009, a metering pump -V54- of type -B- with a modified connector is being gradually introduced. Pay attention to correct assignment. If the metering pump -V54- of type -A- with the plug connection fitted in Model Year 2008 is no longer available, a different connector (with the corresponding contacts from the wiring harness repair set -VAS 1978 B-) must be attached to the wiring harness. When doing so, pay attention to the correct connection assignment → Electronic parts catalogue and → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
Removal (Audi A5 Coupé or Audi A4)
–  Switch off ignition (and auxiliary heater).
–  If fitted, remove the right underbody trim panel → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. Gr.66.
  Note
For greater clarity, the metering pump -V54- is shown in its installation position on the support (axle section to right of fuel tank).
  A82-10159
–  Unscrew the nuts -8-.
–  Detach the support -7- → Running gear; Rep. Gr.42.
–  Unfasten the clamp -5-.
–  Unplug the connector -4- from the metering pump -V54--3-.
–  Detach the fuel hose -6- from the metering pump -V54--3- and seal the fuel pipes.
–  Unfasten the quick-release coupling -1- → Chapter and seal the fuel pipe.
Removal (Audi Q5)
–  Switch off ignition (and auxiliary heater).
–  Remove the right underbody trim panel (with the corresponding holders in front of the fuel tank) → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. Gr.66.
  A82-10105
–  Unplug the connector -4- from the metering pump -V54--3-.
  Note
This illustration shows the connector -4- and the metering pump -V54--3- gradually introduced as of Model Year 2009.
–  Unfasten the clamp -5-.
–  Detach the fuel hose -6- from the metering pump -V54--3- and seal the fuel pipes.
–  Unfasten the quick-release coupling -1- → Chapter and seal the fuel pipe.
–  Unfasten the metering pump -V54--3- from the holders -2-.
Installation (all vehicles)
Install in reverse order; paying attention to the following:
  A82-10161
–  Replace the hose clamp -5- at the fuel pipe with clamps of the same type → Electronic Parts Catalogue, butt-joint the fuel pipe and secure the clamps using suitable pliers.
Pay attention to the following when installing the metering pump -V54-:
t  Fit the metering pump -V54- and the corresponding fuel pipes such that they do not make contact with other components (noise).
t  Take care not to twist the fuel pipes.
t  Attach the fuel pipes at the intended locations.
–  Slacken off the rear right running gear spring with a spring tensioner and then screw on the support -7- → Running gear; Rep. Gr.42 (Audi A4 and Audi A5 Coupé).
–  Fit the right underbody trim panel (with the corresponding holders in front of the fuel tank) → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. Gr.50 (Audi Q5).
–  After replacing the metering pump -V54-, switch on the auxiliary heater and check the operating sequence → Chapter.
  Note
After removing and installing fuel system components, the auxiliary heater is to be switched on and operated at full load for at least 10 minutes to ensure complete bleeding of the fuel pipe.
