Removing and installing gear detector switch -F208- with gearbox installed Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-

t  Gearbox support -T10337-

t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-

t  Release tool -T40138-

Removing –  Remove rear noise insulation (loosen fasteners -2- and -3-).

Note The flexible pipe connection (de-coupling element) in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10° - otherwise it can be damaged. –  Disconnect exhaust system at clamp(s) -arrows-. –  Using suitable wire, tie up front exhaust pipe to one side of rear section of exhaust system (at clamp).

–  Support gearbox using engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- with gearbox support -T10337- attached. –  Slightly lift gearbox with engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.   WARNING Risk of accident. Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- must remain in position when work is being carried out and must not be left unattended.

–  Remove bolts -arrows- for tunnel cross member.

–  Lower gearbox using engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- only until dimension -a- is reached between tunnel cross member and body. l  Dimension -a- = 70 mm (minimum)

–  Unplug electrical connector -1- for gear detector switch -F208- using release tool -T40138- and move wiring clear.   Note Items marked -2- and -3- can be disregarded. –  Unscrew gear detector switch -F208- from selector shaft cover.

Installing –  Screw gear detector switch -F208- into selector shaft cover. Tightening torque → Anchor –  Plug in connector -2- at gear detector switch -F208-.   Note Items marked -1- and -3- can be disregarded.

–  Tighten bolts -arrows- for tunnel cross member. Tightening torque → Item –  Assemble exhaust system and align so it is free of stress → Rep. gr.26. –  Install rear noise insulation → Rep. gr.66. Tightening torque
