Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  U/J extension and socket, 10 mm -3220-

t  Socket insert AF 12 for glow plugs 4-cyl.TDI CR diesel -VAS 6454- (for glow plugs for cylinders 2 and 5)
Removing
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Remove engine cover panel → Chapter.
  Note
t  For cylinders No. 3 and 6 the respective intake manifold flap motor must be detached. Do not detach the connecting rod. The wiring harness must also be detached (unscrew the respective retaining stud for the engine cover panel).
t  On cylinders 3 and 5, a combustion chamber pressure sender is integrated in the glow plugs.
t  Designation: glow plug 2 -Q11- with cylinder 2 combustion chamber pressure sender -G678-
t  Designation: glow plug 5 -Q14- with cylinder 5 combustion chamber pressure sender -G681-

Glow plug versions
1 - Glow plug with combustion chamber pressure sender (only installed on cylinders 2 and 5)
2 - Glow plug without combustion chamber pressure sender
–  Detach glow plug connectors from glow plugs.
–  Clean glow plug openings in cylinder head; make sure no dirt gets into cylinder.
  Note
t  Cleaning procedure:
t  Use a vacuum cleaner to remove coarse dirt.
t  Spray brake cleaner or suitable cleaning agent into glow plug openings, let it work in briefly, and blow out with compressed air.
t  Then clean the glow plug openings using a cloth moistened with oil.
–  To loosen glow plugs 1, 3, 4 and 6, use U/J extension and socket, 10 mm -3220-.
–  To loosen glow plugs 2 and 5, use socket insert AF 12 for glow plugs 4-cyl.TDI CR diesel -VAS 6454-.
Installing
–  Fit glow plugs carefully by hand or using a suitable hose. Keep the glow plugs straight while screwing them back in.
–  To tighten glow plugs, use U/J extension and socket, 10 mm -3220- / socket insert AF 12 for glow plugs 4-cyl.TDI CR diesel -VAS 6454- and a suitable torque wrench.
l  Tightening torque: 17 Nm
–  Attach glow plug connectors correctly and make sure connectors are securely fitted.
–  Install any ancillary units that were previously detached.
l  Tightening torque for intake manifold flap motor: refer to exploded view of intake manifold → Chapter.
