Basic function
1 - Active steering control unit -J792-
2 - Activation signal
3 - Electro-mechanical drive (actuator)
4 - Steering input by driver
5 - Superposition angle
6 - Effective steering angle
A superposition gear (actuator) → Chapter is integrated in the steering train. The superposition gear maintains the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front axle in all situations. In the event of serious system faults, the motor shaft of the superposition gear locks. The purpose of this is to prevent malfunctions. A control unit determines whether an increase or reduction in steering angle is needed. The control unit activates an electric motor, which drives the superposition gear. The total steering lock angle of the wheels is determined by adding the superposition angle to the steering angle input by the driver at the steering wheel. The superposition angle can:
t  increase the driver's steering input
t  reduce the driver's steering input
t  generate a steering angle without any steering input from the driver
