Constant Velocity Joint: Testing and Inspection
Rear Drive Axle With 108 mm Dia. Outer Constant Velocity Joint

Outer constant velocity joint, checking

The joint should be disassembled to replace dirty grease or for checking the balls and ball tracks for wear and damage.

Disassembling

-

Before disassembling, mark position of ball hub in relation to ball cage and joint body with an electric marker or oil stone (arrow).

Swivel ball hub and ball cage.

-

Remove balls one after the other.

-

Turn cage until two cage windows - arrow - are level with joint body.

-

Lift out cage together with hub.

-

Swivel one segment of hub into one of the cage windows.

Tilt hub out of cage.

Checking

The 6 balls in each joint belong to one tolerance group. Check stub axle, hub, cage and balls for pitting and signs of seizure. Excessive backlash in the
joint will cause knocking or jolts under load change; in such cases the joint must be replaced. Polished areas and visible ball track marks are not a
reason for replacing the joint.

Assembling

-

Press required quantity of grease into joint body (100 mm diameter) or (108 mm diameter) for quantity and type of grease.

Install cage with hub into joint body.
