Auxiliary Water Pump: Description and Operation

Coolant Pump

‹› Only on 6 cylinder vehicles The FSI engine, and on other engines with a specific equipment level (for example, vehicles with "Start/Stop System

") but without an "auxiliary heater" have a Coolant Pump (V50) installed. The coolant pump (V50) control varies based on the vehicle equipment
level and the time of manufacture, refer to Wiring diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component locations and Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and
Information System VAS 5051 in "Guided Fault Finding" function. 

‹› Only on 6 cylinder vehicles On the FSI engine without an "auxiliary heater", the Coolant Pump (V50) -  A - is located between the engine and the

right longitudinal member under the right head lamp (this illustration shows the location on an Audi A5 Coupe with a 6 cylinder, FSI engine), the
location on the Audi A4 and the Audi Q5 with a different engine may be different).

‹› When the Coolant Pump (V50) is running, the coolant is drawn in through the coolant hose - B - (from the engine) and delivered through the

coolant hose - C - to the A/C heat exchanger (note flow direction - arrows - ).

‹› Depending on the time of manufacture, the Coolant Pump (V50) is actuated by the Recirculation Pump Relay (J160) (same output as the

Climatronic Refrigerant Shut-Off Valve (N422)) or from MY 2009 directly by the Climatronic Control Module (J255), A/C control head,=>
Wiring diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component locations and Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 in "Guided Fault
Finding" function. 

‹› On vehicles with a Recirculation Pump Relay (J160 ) (for example, MY 2008 vehicles), the Coolant Pump (V50) is always actuated when ignition

is switched, if the Climatronic Refrigerant Shut-Off Valve (N422) is not actuated (for example, at temperature setting "warm" on the Climatronic
Control Module (J255), A/C control head. 

‹› On vehicles without a Recirculation Pump Relay ( J160) (from MY 2009), with the ignition switched on and depending on the coolant

temperature, the Coolant Pump (V50) is directly actuated by the climatronic control module, A/C control head => Wiring diagrams,
Troubleshooting & Component locations and Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 in "Guided Fault Finding" function. 

‹› The Coolant Pump (V50) (to support the engine coolant pump) is activated, when the engine is running and, for example, the temperature preselect

"Warm" to the A/C Control Head Climatronic Control Module (J255) (display " HI" in the A/C Control Head display and the Multi Media
Interface) 

‹› If the Coolant Pump (V50) and the Climatronic Refrigerant Shut-Off Valve (N422) are actuated directly by the Climatronic Control Module (J255

), A/C control head, then any malfunctions in these components will stored in the Climatronic Control Module (J255) A/C control head; pay
attention to the version, coding and adaptation ( J255) Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 in "Guided Fault Finding"
function.

‹› Vehicles equipped with a "parking heater" as an optional equipment do not have a Climatronic Refrigerant Shut-Off Valve (N422) or a Coolant

Pump (V50) installed. On these vehicles, the parking heater performs this function (the Engine Coolant (EC) Switch-Off Valve (heater) (N279)
and the Recirculation Pump (V55)).
