Brake Bleeding: Service and Repair
Flushing Brake System

WARNING:

Brake fluid is poisonous. It must never be extracted using suction by mouth through a hose.

If brake fluid contacts skin or eyes, flush or wash adequately to prevent irritation. Get medical attention if necessary.

CAUTION:

Brake fluid must be disposed of properly.

Use only fresh brake fluid conforming to US Standard FMVSS 116DOT4. Genuine VW/Audi brake fluid conforms to this specification.

Brake fluid must not be allowed to come into contact with the paintwork because of its caustic effect.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic; in other words, it absorbs moisture from the surrounding air, and should therefore always be kept in airtight containers.

CHANGING BRAKE FLUID USING PRESSURE BLEEDER APPLIANCE US 1116 OR EQUIVALENT

1. Connect bleeding appliance US 1116, or equivalent, to brake system following tool manufacturers instructions.
2. Connect a suitable collection bottle to each bleeder in sequence shown in the following list; then, according to specifications shown, let brake fluid

flow out. Used brake fluid will be forced out of system by pumping in new fluid.

Sequence And Quantity Of Brake Fluid To Flow Out:
a. Right rear - 500 cc (approx. 1 pt.)
b. Left rear - 500 cc (approx. 1 pt.)
c. Right front - 500 cc (approx. 1 pt.)
d. Left front - 500 cc (approx. 1 pt.)

3. Ensure fluid level in reservoir is correct.

 
CHANGING BRAKE FLUID WITHOUT US 1116 OR EQUIVALENT PRESSURE BRAKE BLEEDING APPLIANCE 

NOTE:  This method should only be used if no brake filling and bleeder appliance is available. 

1. Use an extractor bottle to extract as much brake fluid as possible from brake fluid reservoir.
2. With bleeder screw open, pump brake pedal in order to pump brake fluid out of brake master cylinder and brake calipers.
