Drive/Propeller Shaft: Service and Repair
Removing and Installing
CAUTION!
-
Do not bend the driveshaft. The maximum permissible bend angle is 25°. Bending the driveshaft further than 25° can cause universal joint
damage.

Store and transport the drive shaft in the extended position only.
Tools required
-
3405 -Alignment fixture
Removing
-
Review notes
-
Remove center muffler
-
Remove driveshaft heat shield.
-
Mark position of flange -A- relative to rear final drive -B- in color, if not already marked.

Loosen mounting bolts of both driveshaft flanges and identify shims.

Install alignment fixture 3405 to driveshaft.
Notes:
-
Do not mount alignment fixture onto balancing plates.

The illustration shows a similar tool. The tool which should be used is 3405.

Loosen securing bolts of center bearing.
-
Remove mounting bolts at flanges to transmission and to rear final drive as well as mounting bolts of center bearing.
Slide driveshaft toward rear final drive. The CV joints are axially movable.

Remove driveshaft together with alignment fixture.
Installation
Install in reverse order of removal. In addition, perform the following work steps.
Notes:
-
To avoid any imbalance, the flanges must be installed so that the colored markings are aligned.

Replace the gasket between the driveshaft and the output or input flange, respectively (pull off backing paper and stick to transmission).

Always install new self-locking bolts.
-
After removing the driveshaft, always clean the residues of any thread locking compound from the threads of bolts at the flange shafts for the
transmission and rear final drive.

The thread locking compound can be cleaned off with a thread tap-

After installing, adjust the driveshaft.
-
Install exhaust system free of stress Refer to Exhaust Systems.
