Axial and radial play, measuring 

Special Tools and Equipment

VW387 dial gauge holder

^

Dial gauge

Axial clearance
^

Attach dial indicator together with VW387 dial gauge holder to cylinder block and set indicator against crankshaft counterweight.

^

Press crankshaft against dial indicator by hand set indicator to 0.

^

Press crankshaft away from dial indicator.

^

Read clearance.

Radial clearance 

Note:  
^

Never interchange used bearing shells.

^

Bearing shells that are worn through the nickel coating must be replaced

Required equipment 
^

Plastigage

^

Main bearing cap removing. Clean bearing caps and journals.

^

Place Plastigage over entire width of bearing journal or into bearing shells.
^

Plastigage must rest in center of bearing shell

^

Install main bearing cap and tighten to 30 Nm. DO NOT turn the crankshaft.

^

Remove main bearing caps again.

^

Compare width of Plastigage with calibrated scale.
