Shock absorbers, checking on shock tester

A shock tester (shock absorber tester) enables shock absorbers to be checked without removing them. The damping effect can be assessed on the basis
of the pointer deflection/printout.

Special tools and equipment

Boge shock tester
or

^

Sachs shock tester VAG 1975
or

^

Maha shock absorber tester VAS 1990

Test requirements: 
^

Temperature +10 to +40°C 

^

Driver in vehicle

^

Inflation pressure OK

^

Vehicle standing centrally aligned and straight on wheel contact plates

^

Front wheels straight ahead

^

Parking brake not applied; foot brake not pressed

Limit values 
The condition of the shock absorber can only be assessed as follows:
^

Adequate damping effect
or

^

Inadequate damping effect

Note: 
^

Intermediate readings for reduced damping performance are not possible.

^

Service life forecasts are not permitted.

^

Measured values which include the influence of the spring travel end stops will be biased.

The following values only apply to the above mentioned test benches. If the stated values are exceeded, less than 50% of shock absorber performance
is being obtained and replacement is justified.

Example:
Limit = 70
^

a = greater than 70: Damping effect insufficient

^

a = less than 70: Damping effect sufficient

The spring/shock absorber combination installed in vehicle is documented through the corresponding PR no. on the vehicle data plate.
