Steering Wheel: Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool
VAS 5051 vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system or VAG 1551 scan tool, connecting and selecting functions
Test requirements
-
Battery voltage at least 11 V
-
Ground connections at engine and transmission OK
Fuses OK
-
Ground (GND) connections and Ground point for transmission OK
-
Check battery Ground (GND) strap and Ground strap between battery and transmission.

Switch ignition off.
NOTE: Data Link Connector is located in driver-side footwell lower left.

Unclip cover for Data Link Connector.

Connect VAS 5051 tester to vehicle with VAS 5051/1 diagnostic wire. Alternately, VAG 1551 Scan Tool can also be attached using VAG
1551/3 adapter.

During a road test in an airbag-equipped vehicle, the VAS 5051 tester or the VAG 1551 scan tool must always be fastened to and
operated from the rear seat by a second technician.
