Seat Belt Tensioner: Technician Safety Information
Pyrotechnic Belt Tensioners, Safety And Handling Instructions
CAUTION:

Testing, removing, installing and repair work may only be performed by qualified personnel.

Do not check with test light, voltmeter or ohmmeter under any circumstances.

You can only check belt tensioners when installed and with vehicle diagnostic, testing and information systems (such as Vehicle Diagnosis,
Testing and Information System VAS 5051B) intended for that purpose.

Before handling belt tensioner units (e.g. disconnecting electrical connector), the person handling it must electrostatically discharge. For
example, by briefly touching door striker.

Voltage must be disconnected during all work on belt tensioners.

Conventional ignition lock: Observe safety precautions with disconnecting battery.

Electronic ignition lock (e.g. A6 as of model year 2005; A8 as of model year 2003): To remove belt tensioner unit, battery must be
disconnected with the ignition switched on, this deviates from the description "disconnecting and connecting battery".

Disconnect battery ground (GND) strap, cover negative battery post. No waiting time is required after disconnecting the battery.

Follow measures after connecting battery.

When connecting belt tensioner, all mechanical parts including those in three-point seat belt, must be secured correctly.

Only those carrying this out should be in vehicle interior.

Belt tensioner components may not be opened nor repaired; always use new parts.

Belt tensioners that have fallen onto a hard surface or show signs of damage must not be installed in vehicle.

Belt tensioners that are mechanically damaged (dents, cracks) must always be replaced.

Belt tensioners must be installed immediately after removing from shipping package.

Belt tensioner is to be returned to shipping package when work is interrupted.

Open end of belt tensioner should never be pointed at anyone.

Wash hands after touching belt tensioners that have deployed.

Storage and transport must conform to national legislation.

It is not acceptable to leave belt tensioner unattended.

Belt tensioner should not be treated with grease, cleaning solutions or other materials.

Belt tensioners must not be exposed to temperatures over 100 degrees, even for a short period of time.
