Take out steering gear through left wheel housing (requires second mechanic).
Note: Take care to ensure that steering gear pinion does not damage bulkhead cover.
Installing

Center removed steering gear with -VAG 1907-.

To do so, unscrew hex socket-head bolt -1- from steering gear.

Move rack until centering mark on rack -arrow- and threaded hole -2- are aligned.

Screw in VAG 1907 hand-tight.

Coat steering gear in area of bulkhead cover with G 052 745 A3.

Position steering gear on plenum chamber.
Note: Make sure that threads and contact surfaces of bolts are free from oil and grease.

Insert bolt -1- but do not tighten yet.

Swivel steering gear on driver's side forward in direction of travel.

Screw on return hose and tighten banjo bolt -2- -22- to 47 Nm.

Screw on pressure hose and tighten banjo bolt -19- to 40 Nm.
With certain versions of engine/transmission, banjo bolts can only be tightened from within the wheel housing.
Note: Pressure and return hoses must not touch one another or be in contact with other components.
