Hydraulic Control Assembly - Antilock Brakes: Testing and Inspection

Brake Pressure Gauge

HIGH PRESSURE INSPECTION

1. Remove bleeder screw on one front brake caliper.
2. Connect brake pressure gauge VAG 1310, or equivalent, and bleed system. See: Service and Repair 
3. Install brake pedal depressor between driver's seat and brake pedal.
4. Load brake pedal until gauge indicates 50 bar (725 psi).
5. Watch gauge for 45 seconds; pressure must not drop more than 4 bar (58 psi).
6. If pressure drop is excessive, replace Antilock Brake System (ABS) hydraulic unit.

 
LOW PRESSURE INSPECTION

1. Connect brake pressure gauge VAG 1310, or equivalent, as outlined above.
2. Adjust brake pedal depressor so that gauge indicates brake line pressure of 6 bar (87 psi).
3. Monitor pressure for 3 minutes; pressure must not drop more than 1 bar (15 psi).
4. If pressure drop is excessive, replace ABS hydraulic unit.
