17 Oil pressure warning at temperatures below freezing

Vehicle Information

Condition

Immediately following an engine cold start with very low ambient temperatures (below -10 degree C / -15 degree C or 14 degree F / 5 degree F).

The engine oil pressure too low warning light is illuminated.

-

The engine is abnormally noisy and rattling.

The complaint may occur on vehicles that are operated in extreme conditions such as mainly used for very short distance operation or where the engine
operating temperature is often not reached after a cold start.

Technical Background

The moisture collecting in the oil pan under extreme conditions may freeze with very cold temperature, and the resulting ice crystals may restrict the
strainer of the oil pump intake pipe. This slows the buildup of the oil pressure at cold start.

Production Solution

-

Optimized the ECM SW (same SW as RVU I3).

-

Optimized the design of the oil pump intake pipe Part No. 06F 115 251 B.

Service

1. Install the optimized oil pump intake pipe (Part No. 06F 115 251 B).

2. Check to see if RVU I3 applies to the vehicle and if it has been performed. The ECM software update below is identical to the procedure

described for RVU I3.

If RVU I3 applies to the vehicle, and it has not been performed, proceed to Step 3 (Perform RVU I3; see also RVU I3 document.)

If RVU I3 does not apply to the vehicle or if it has already been performed, no ECM update is necessary. Proceed to Step 5.

3. Check the ECM to ensure it has not been tuned.
