Replacing Airbag Unit After An Accident

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Diagnostic Operating System VAS 5051 A

NOTE:
-

Airbag control module can be used for up to three actuations of side / head-level airbags and/or belt tensioners.

-

After the third actuation, the DTC "control module faulty" will appear.

Airbag control module must be replaced:

-

After driver-side/ passenger-side airbag deployment

-

After three deployments of side or head-level airbag

-

If housing is damaged

-

If there is a deformation at channel, in a circumference of 200 mm around control module

Always replace the following:

-

Any deployed airbag unit

Also replace the following if passenger-side airbag deploys:

-

Instrument panel

-

Deformed supports for passenger module (must not be bent back into place)

-

Both sensors for front airbag on front end

-

Lateral acceleration sensor if area near sensor in floor pan is deformed

Also replace the following if driver-side airbag deploys:

-

Return spring with slip ring

-

Both sensors for front airbag on front end

-

Lateral acceleration sensor if area near sensor in floor pan is deformed

Also replace the following if side airbag deploys:

-

Lateral acceleration sensor for side at which airbag that deployed

-

For foldable rear seat back: Side cushion

-

Remaining lateral acceleration sensor if area near sensor in floor pan is deformed

Also replace the following if head-level airbag deploys:

-

Lateral acceleration sensor for side at which airbag that deployed

-

Trim panel at A-pillar, B-pillar, C-pillar, D-pillar

-

Remaining lateral acceleration sensor if area near sensor in floor pan is deformed

Also:

-

All seatbelts with belt tensioners that have been triggered

A - if airbag control module has been triggered:

-

Connect Diagnostic Operating System VAS 5051 A and select vehicle system "15. Airbag". Ignition must be switched on for this.

Front seatbelt tensioners:

-
