Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair
Right Flange Shaft Seal

NOTE:  The following special tools and test equipment are required for this work:

VW 681 - Lever

3382 - Thrust piece

REMOVAL

-

Remove right front wheel.

-

Unbolt heat shield for right drive shaft.

-

Remove right drive shaft. 

-

Remove central bolt of right flange shaft -arrow-; hold flange shaft with drift to prevent it from turning.

-

Place oil drip tray below.

-

Pull out right flange shaft.

-

Use the lever VW 681 to remove seal for right flange shaft.

INSTALLATION 

NOTE:

The open side of the seal faces toward the transmission.

^

Moisten the outer circumference and sealing lip of the seal with gear oil or apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly.

Use thrust piece 3382 to install seal for right flange shaft until thrust piece makes contact.

The seal must be installed to an equal depth all around in the housing.

Check gear oil in final drive and top up, refer to Checking/Topping Up Oil Level.

-

Tighten the following components to:

Right flange shaft to transmission: 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
Drive shaft to flange shaft: 80 Nm (59 ft lb)
Drive shaft to wheel hub:

14 mm stretch bolts (replace): 115 Nm (85 ft lb) + 90°
