Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Testing and Inspection

Hydraulic Adjusting Elements, Checking

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

‹› Feeler gauge

‹› Irregular valve noises are normal while starting the engine.

Procedure

-

Start engine and let it run until radiator fan has switched on once.

Increase engine speed for about 2 minutes to approximately 2500 RPM, perform road test if necessary.

‹› If irregular valve noises disappear but reappear during short drives, oil check valve should be replaced. Oil check valve location: In oil filter

housing - through 04.2005 => [ (Item 6) Oil filter housing ] See: Engine Lubrication/Oil Filter Housing/Service and Repair, from 05.2005 => [
(Item 7) Oil filter housing ] See: Engine Lubrication/Oil Filter Housing/Service and Repair.

If hydraulic adjusting elements are still loud, determine which element is faulty:

Remove cylinder head cover. Refer to: Left => [ Left Cylinder Head Cover ] See: Cylinder Head Assembly/Valve Cover/Service and Repair/Left
Cylinder Head Cover, right => [ Right Cylinder Head Cover ] See: Cylinder Head Assembly/Valve Cover/Service and Repair/Right Cylinder Head
Cover.

Rotate crankshaft until lobes on the hydraulic adjusting element to be checked face upward:

‹› Manual Transmission With 4th gear engaged an ignition switched off, slide forward.

‹› With multitronic or automatic transmission: Rotate crankshaft clockwise at ribbed belt pulley center bolt.

Check play between cam lobes and roller rocker lever.

Press roller rocker lever down with screwdriver - arrow -. 

If a 0.20 mm feeler gauge can be inserted between camshaft and roller rocker lever:

Replace hydraulic adjuster. Refer to => [ Camshafts ] See: Camshaft/Service and Repair/Camshafts.

‹› After installing the camshafts, the engine may not be started for approximately 30 minutes. The hydraulic adjusting elements must seat themselves

(otherwise the valves will seat themselves on the pistons).

‹› After working on the valvetrain and lifters, carefully rotate the crankshaft by hand at least 2 full revolutions before starting to be sure that valves

do not strike the pistons.
