Unclip brake line.

Note:  Figure shows rear axle without wheel bearing unit, to illustrate it more clearly.

^

Unscrew attachment bolts (arrows) from brake caliper housing.

^

Remove brake pads.

^

Hang brake caliper on body.

^

Remove brake disc.

^

Use a felt-tip pen to mark contours of left and right mounting brackets in a visible manner on side member.

Note:  To remove and install axle beam, use engine/transmission jack VAG1383 with holder 135912.

Unscrew bolts (arrows) on both sides of mounting bracket and remove rear axle.

Installing

Insert rear axle in vehicle.

^

Orient mounting brackets according to felt-tip pen marks on side member.

^

Replace all bolts and nuts.

^

Fix bolts, check vehicle settings, and adjust if necessary

^

Tighten bolts (arrows) for mounting bracket to 110 Nm plus additional 90°

^

Pull down rear axle, by second mechanic if necessary, and install coil spring. Note installation position, item no. 4.
