Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
The Camshaft Position Sensor signal is used to recognize ignition point for cylinder number one (1) for starting the engine. The signal is also used for
cylinder selective knock control and to determine fuel injection timing and sequence.
CONSTRUCTION
The Camshaft Position Sensor consists of a magnetic enclosure and integrated semiconductor circuit (the Hall IC) and a shutter wheel.
OPERATION
A voltage signal is generated when the shutter wheel interrupts the magnetic field of the IC. Since the shutter turns at camshaft speed, one signal is
generated for every two crankshaft revolutions.
The engine cannot be started if the signal is not received by the Engine Control Module. If the signal fails during engine operation, the ignition timing
will be retared by 11° and a fault code will be stored.
