Condition

Whining or howling noises from engine compartment.

When air conditioning (AC) controls are switched to ECON, the noise immediately stops.

Possible Cause:

AC dryer holder vibrates when the engine and AC compressor are both running. When the AC controls are switched to ECON, the AC compressor is
switched OFF, refrigerant pressure drops and the holder ceases to vibrate.

Improved dryer holders from VIN number 4F_5N065000

Service

To determine if noise is caused by the dryer holder:

Start and run engine with A/C switched to any position OTHER than ECON.

With noise present, switch the A/C to ECON. If noise stops, install NEW improved dryer holder, Part No: 4F0 260 197 B, using NEW nut (M6), Part
No: N 904 861 01 and NEW buffer bolt, Part No: 4F0 121 268.

Prior to installing new improved dryer holder:

Tip:

Immediately close and seal all open refrigerant hoses and connections to prevent humidity from entering the AC system.

Refer to appropriate section of Group 87, Air conditioning system in Repair Manual for complete dryer holder replacement instructions.

Extract refrigerant.

Remove old dryer holder. See Repair Manual Group 57, Air conditioning system.
