Malfunction Indicator Lamp: Testing and Inspection
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K83 In the Instrument Cluster
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K83 In The Instrument Cluster
MIL is an abbreviation for the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K83.
If the SIMOS Control Module J361 recognizes malfunctions that lead to a worsening of emissions values, it indicates them by lighting the Malfunction
Indicator Lamp (MIL) K83 in the instrument cluster.
Function
The SIMOS Control Module J361 switches on the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K83 after the ignition is switched on. Shortly after the engine is
started, The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K83 goes out, if the SIMOS Control Module J361 does not detect a malfunction that worsens the
emissions values and, secondly, activation of the lamp by the SIMOS Control Module J361 is OK.
Malfunction messages
If malfunctions that worsen emissions are recognized during operation of the engine, the ECM switches on the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K83.
An entry is made in DTC memory of the SIMOS Control Module J361 at the same time.
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K83 can blink or remain lit continuously. In any case, the DTC memory must be checked. See: Powertrain
Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Scan Tool Testing and Procedures/Diagnostic Mode 3: Interrogating Fault
Memory
Continuously lit:
There is a malfunction that causes increased emissions values. The DTC memory of the SIMOS Control Module J361 must be checked. See: Powertrain
Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Scan Tool Testing and Procedures/Diagnostic Mode 3: Interrogating Fault
Memory
Blinking
There is a malfunction that causes damage to the catalytic converter in this driving condition (e.g. combustion misfire). In this case, the vehicle must only
be driven at reduced power.
NOTE: If there is a driveability problem or a customer complaint and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K83 does not light up, the DTC memory
must be checked. There may be DTCs stored that do not cause the exhaust MIL to light up immediately, but only after the engine is started again and the
malfunction is recognized again.
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K83 function test
-
Switch the ignition on.
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K83 must light up.
-
Start the engine
Shortly after the engine is started, the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K83 will go out if there are no emissions-relevant malfunctions stored in DTC
memory.
NOTE: The switch-on signal for Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K83 is transferred from the SIMOS Control Module J361 to the instrument cluster
via CAN-bus. Check terminal resistance for CAN-bus. See: Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Information Bus/Testing and
Inspection
