Engine Speed Sensor: Testing and Inspection
Engine Speed (RPM) Signal, Checking
Engine Speed (RPM) signal, checking
NOTE: The signal is generated by Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor -G28 and processed by the engine control module.
To obtain engine speed, proceed as follows:

Connect Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS5051 or VAG 1551 Scan Tool and select engine electronics control module by
entering address word "01", Refer to "Scan Tool Testing/Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks/Connecting VAG 1551/ VAS 5051 Scan Tool"
See: Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection . When doing this the ignition must be switched on.

Check all control modules for a missing RPM signal via the "Automatic Test sequence."

Press -0- button twice to select "Automatic Test Sequence" function and confirm entry by pressing -Q- button.
No malfunctions relating to a missing "Engine Speed (RPM) signal" should be stored in any of the control modules.
If one of the control modules indicates a malfunction:

Check for open circuit or short circuit between engine control module and the control module concerned.

Display readiness code, Refer to "Monitors, Trips and/or Drive Cycle (Readiness Codes)/Displaying Readiness Code" See: Powertrain
Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection . Readiness code must be generated if DTC memory was erased, Refer to
"Monitors, Trips and/or Drive Cycle (Readiness Codes)/Generating Readiness Code" See: Powertrain Management/Computers and Control
