Shift Linkage: Service and Repair

Notes:

Adjusting shift linkage: refer to Adjustments

Before removing shift linkage, remove center console at front and rear

-

Remove crossmembers at front and rear as necessary, loosen heat shield and move toward rear

-

Vehicles with 6-cylinder engine, remove three-way catalytic converter on right side

-

Remove center rear duct for air conditioning

1. Shift knob
2. Bushing
3. Retaining frame
4. Cover

-

Carefully pry locking lugs out of center console at rear

5. Screw
6. Bushing
7. Cup seal
8. Circlip

-

Do not overstretch when installing

9. Spacer bushing

10. Spring
11. Ball stop

-

Place spring and bushing in ball stop and install on shift lever so that bushing and spring are on right-hand side in direction of travel

-

Install ball stop before inserting circlip -19-

12. Spring
13. Bushing

-

Rounded side faces shift lever

14. Shift lever

-

Can be inserted in ball housing in one position only

15. Nut

-

25 Nm (18 ft lb) 

16. Leaf spring
17. Connecting piece
18. Spacer tube
19. Circlip

-

Always replace

-

Rounded side faces toward ball housing
