Rear Knuckle: Removal and Replacement

Wheel Bearing Housing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Removing

Vehicles with coil springs

Front Wheel Drive (FWD)

-

Remove coil spring. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] See: Suspension Spring ( Coil / Leaf ). 

All Wheel Drive (AWD)

-

Remove wheel covers, remove cover cap on light-alloy wheels (removal hook in vehicle tool kit).

Loosen collar bolt for outer joint of drive axle (only loosen when vehicle is standing on its wheels "Risk of accident"). Refer to => [ Drive Axle

Assembly/Service and Repair/Removal and Replacement/Rear Suspension/Drive Axle Outer Joint Collar Bolt, Loosening and Tightening.

Remove coil spring. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] See: Suspension Spring ( Coil / Leaf ). 

Vehicles with air suspension

FWD

-

Place vehicle on a hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] See: Service and Repair/Procedures/Positioning Vehicle on
Hoist and Wheels.

Bleed air spring at rear axle. Refer to => [ Rear Axle Air Spring, Bleeding and Filling ] See: Suspension Control ( Automatic - Electronic )/Air
Spring/Service and Repair/Procedures/Rear Suspension/Rear Axle Air Spring, Bleeding and Filling.

AWD

-

Place vehicle on a hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] See: Service and Repair/Procedures/Positioning Vehicle on
Hoist and Wheels.

Remove wheel covers, remove cover cap on light-alloy wheels (removal hook in vehicle tool kit).

Bleed air spring at rear axle. Refer to => [ Rear Axle Air Spring, Bleeding and Filling ] See: Suspension Control ( Automatic - Electronic )/Air

All vehicles

-

Remove brake caliper and brake disc.

-

Secure brake caliper to body so weight of caliper does not stress or damage brake hose or brake line.

-

Remove bolts - arrows - and remove cover plate.
