Shock Absorbers, Checking Noises
Shock absorbers are often replaced because of rattling noises. Tests on the test stands and on vehicles have determined that for approximately 70% of
the shock absorber complaints there was no problem and replacement was not necessary.
Proceed as follows for complaints which are interpreted as rattling or cracking noises:

Determine where, when and how noises develop during a road test with the customer. If possible, road test vehicle on a dry, uneven driving
surface.

Perform troubleshooting procedure by the malfunction table Troubleshooting noises from front and rear of vehicle.

Note: It is only in very few cases that the shock absorbers are at fault for the noises.
